Yeah I kinda feel like given the current (and rising) popularity of back 3 systems in our league and given the preferences of our best players, we really should be playing with a back 3. The Spalletti appointment feels a bit mistimed to me, unless he opens his mind to a change of formation away from his favorite back 4. The only important players that come to mind who would prefer a back 4 formation are Chiesa and to a lesser extent Di Lorenzo. However, we don't have a convincing RWs (especially now that Berardi is not available for the Euros), pretty much all of our best CBs are more accustomed to playing in a back 3, and taking some inspiration from the successful Inter system would make a lot of sense given the fact that Bastoni, Dimarco and Barella should all be starters and arguably Acerbi and Frattesi as well. Then of course formations can be malleable, and we can transition to a back 3 of sorts when attacking, but that doesn't negate all of the issues imo.
