My prediction/analysis on how I think Xabi Alonso would set up his Liverpool side: At Leverkusen he has predominately used a 3421 but it also goes to a 4231 as well with how the players act off the ball and how the formation transitions. GK - Alisson - Nuff said LCB - Gomez CCB - VVD RCB - Konate In the defence, he likes the back 3 to be spread wide with the wide CB (Gomez and Konate) being the fastest and best on the ball and I went with Gomez as he has to most experience as a fullback and is easily able to cover for the wingback by covering as the fullback and the same goes for Konate with him being fast and comfortable on the ball. VVD can command the defence and given he plays in a back 3 for the Netherlands he can easily play in the back 3. This can really help replicate the Hincapie - Tapsoba - Stanisic/Kossounou back 3 although I won't be suprised if he brought in Hincapie if Xabi Alonso does join Liverpool. LM/LWB - Robertson CM - Curtis Jones CM - Mac Allister RM/RWB - TAA With the midfield, there are clear profiles with who he wants in the pivot. Both can sit deep but one of the midfielders Xabi Alonso wants a bit like himself in the sense of being able to sit deep and control, the tempo and midfield as a "Regista" I can see Mac Allister thriving in this role especially as he won't be a lone 6 here and he would have a work horse next to him and this player would be a player who can defend better but also drive with the ball and although Jones has been playing a bit more advanced I didn't really know who else to put there? Maybe Endo or Gravenberch? the wingbacks have different profiles, I see TAA as a very good creative player like Grimaldo, a player who can operate in half spaces and slot into the midfield and support the midfield rather than go straight into attack which is what the other fullback does. Robertson would be essentially like Frimpong and I am not sure if Robertson can do this and you Liverpool fans can let me know but he will be playing much more as a winger than a fullback, getting forward and looking to attack the oppositions box rather than support the build up at times. CF - Szboszlai CF - Salah ST - Nunez This is where it gets a little tricky, at Leverkusen Alonso has Wirtz and Hoffman who act as pure 10's, they are 2 CAM's who have freedom to slot into midfield and help with build up and they can trust their instincts on what they want to do as they can both read the game well and I see Szobozlai being very good here especially as he is playing in a much more advanced role as he is doing under Klopp but Salah I m not sure of, obvs Salah is your best player so I think that we would see Szobozlai playing as a roaming 10 where he can drop into midfield and help with build up but then also push behind defences and combine with the striker and then Salah could act as an inside forward, a player can operate in those pockets of space and carry the ball forward and then also attack the box and play off the shoulder of the main striker. Diaz, Jota and maybe Gakpo could all benefit from this sort of role as well I am not sure how this could work but this is my prediction. Striker is Nunez is 100%, he is tall, strong and is an absolute work horse and is relentless so he would be Xabi Alonso's Boniface but with a few more attributes that could help defensively as well as attacking wise in terms of pressing although Leverkusen don't press as hard as say Klopps' Liverpool, I think that with Nunez he would re think that and with Nunez strength and heigh, he would be a tall, physical figure, a proper 9 for the likes of Salah, Szobozlai to play off of and a target in the box for the wingbacks to cross to. Sorry for the long posts, if I got some of the predictions for Alonso's Liverpool line up wrong then please let me know who fits the profile better. Cheers lads
