But you’ve never watched him. You have a good enough defensive set up to have a slightly attacking player and he shows great work rate and tracks back a lot, he can still slot in there and play in that position if needed.

in modern football they are the same position. It is about roles. A winger can be attacking, supporting, or defensive. In a sport where positions are fluid and reliant on tactical instruction, a player who lines up as a winger can end up playing the same role as a player who lines up as a wide midfielder. A wide midfielder often plays the same tactical role as a wingback.
